The temperature of the water in pumping stations and elevated tanks is usually between 5 and 12 ° C. That means – the lines and pipes are also about the same cold. If moisture-saturated, warmer ambient air meets the cold pipes, this leads to the precipitation of condensation water. 

Condensation water is created by moist air that settles on cooler surfaces, visible in droplets.

Condensation in the waterworks – problems and consequences

Difficulties caused by condensation in waterworks can manifest themselves in a wide variety of ways. The most common problems related to this include:

  • Malfunctions and subsequent failures of the electrical systems
  • Corrosion and moisture damage to the building
  • Increased risk of accidents due to damp and wet operating areas
  • Peeling of protective coatings
  • Impairment of hygiene by algae, microorganisms, mold, fungi and bacteria
  • Damage from rust on machines and pipes

If important electrical systems are damaged by the condensation, this can lead to malfunctions and in the worst case to failures. That means: expensive and lengthy repairs.

In addition, corrosion damage and signs of wear and tear on technical components increase proportionally with the intensity of the condensation water. The result is increased maintenance costs.
